Cross the Ditch 16: Winter 2019 The days have grown short and winter has returned to Australasia. From New Zealand's snow-covered South Island to the beaches of Australia's Gold Coast, from wild and windy Wellington to cosmopolitan Melbourne and bustling Sydney, aircraft everywhere are taking to the skies to Cross the Ditch! Check out the official Cross the Ditch website Apply to provide ATC Book your Flights now! View the Event Schedule Check out the Virtual Airline Leaderboard Grab the recommended add-on scenery for each of the event airports What's it all about? For twenty hours this December, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch. An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes all range from two-and-a-half to four hours flight time. Throughout the event, the Oceania region's two divisions – VATNZ and VATPAC – will be providing full ATC coverage, in the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event. This is a great opportunity to experience Oceanic flying without the need to commit to an eight-hour flight! If you're new to Oceanic Flying, our reporting tool makes taking part a breeze. Event Times This twenty hour event is timed to allow pilots from all over the world join the fun: UTC: Saturday 15th June 2019 18:00 - Sunday 16th June 2019 14:00 AEST: Sunday 16th June 2019 04:00 - Monday 17th June 2019 00:00 NZST: Sunday 16th June 2019 06:00 - Monday 17th June 2019 02:00 Waves This season's event is organised in waves. Each airport will have a three-to-four hour departure window, during which time flights will be able to leave for the next destination. As the window closes, the departure window will open at the next destination. Given each of the flights is 2.5 - 4hrs in length, the previous wave's flights will be arriving at the same airport as the next wave departs, maximising the amount of traffic at each airport. NOTE: in order to ensure that you have ATC coverage throughout your flight, you MUST fly the wave route that is active at the time of your departure. The individual routes are designed to ensure as much opposing traffic enroute as possible. Each flight passes from one Oceania division to the other, and the result is six mini-flyins over the course of twenty hours! The Waves for Cross the Ditch 16 - Winter 2019 are: Wave Flight Departure Window UTC AEST NZST 1 Christchurch (NZCH) to Sydney (YSSY) 1800-2030 0400-0630 0600-0830 2 Sydney (YSSY) to Queenstown (NZQN) (B753/A321 and smaller) 2030-0000 0630-1000 0830-1200 2a Sydney (YSSY) to Christchurch (NZCH) (Wide-body aircraft only) 2030-0000 0630-1000 0830-1200 3 Queenstown (NZQN) to Gold Coast (YBCG) (B753/A321 and smaller) 2330-0300 0930-1300 1130-1500 3a Christchurch (NZCH) to Gold Coast (YBCG) (Wide-body aircraft only) 2330-0300 0930-1300 1130-1500 4 Gold Coast (YBCG) to Wellington (NZWN) 0300-0630 1300-1630 1500-1830 5 Wellington (NZWN) to Melbourne (YMML) 0630-1000 1630-2000 1830-2200 Calling all Pilots and Controllers Flight plans are available from the Flight Plans section. Ladies and Gentleman, On Saturday 20th April 2019, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane welcomes VATUSA to Friday Night Ops. Kicking off at Friday 19th April 2019 at 2330z , So drop the juice box or the glass of whiskey and get your flight plans filed. VATPAC has your ATC Covered manning airspace between Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane! We invite and encourage you to fly between the three airports, In any order you wish. You should allow approx 1.5-2.5 hours flying time for Jets between any given pair. Flight Planning In Australia, flight plans are filed in the ICAO method, with the SID/STAR not included with the initial filing. This will be provided by ATC on contact with clearance delivery (for departure) and with Centre, usually just prior to initial descent clearance. In Sydney each different runway has it's own set of SID's, which can be hard to predict ahead of time. Due to this, the outbound route should start with "TESAT". TESAT is an RNAV waypoint located on the airfield, replacing the old VOR "SY" which has since been decommissioned in the real world as part of the Navigation Rationalization project which removed 179 ground-based navigation aids on the 26th of May 2016, meaning GNSS is now the primary means of navigation for all instrument flight rule aircraft and flight plans. Knowledge about deleting waypoints and closing route discontinuities in your FMS will be useful. Cheats include knowing the 2nd waypoint along the initial airway. Additionally be aware that ATC is likely to ammend the text of your route when giving clearance in the same manner as the Electronic Flight Strip is used in the real world. Once you file it, it's theirs. Flight Plan Route To help with filing your flight plan, we reccomend Simbrief as a free service additionally there is a number of payware flightplaning software Simbrief Flight Planning Software Recommended Routes With everything that has been said above VATPAC wishes to recommend a few routes to pilots that will be fully staffed during the event. The following positions will be the primary positions: SY_TWR SY_APP ML-WOL_CTR To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Sydney prior to occupying others. Remember, There are no reserved positions so if one of the above positions is available, logon! What is Iron Mic? Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic. Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT) How do we know about our progress? Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week. Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Cairns positions. You can do this on Facebook, Teamspeak or the forums. VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11100 If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Good Luck VATPAC!
