I know this is an older thread (bit like the OP - 😃) but I have to say that as a 35 year ATC and having used the original Eurocat system for almost 10 years in Brisbane, I take my hat off to you Jake for the development of this wonderful product.

Hey Rob - your PM's are off - can you ping me when you get a get a sec?

    Cheers :)

WOL CTR covering YSSY top down  (can extend to MDE / SNO )

    Main Monitor (Right)

    • Main monitor 1920x1080 - Primary ASD.  I make sure I save an alternate view (<INS>) of the whole sector I'm covering so I can quickly get back to it (<DEL>)
    • AIS window with WX for pertinent airfields always visible - I add when people fly to them, e.g. Griffith, etc.
    • Per Jake's technique, Jurisdiction window (and others)  reduced to 1 or 2 strips (depending on available screen space)  as the strips autoscroll to ensure the selected aircraft always is displayed in the strip window.
    • When busy, I use Handoff strip window (Main monitor) to ensure any pending handoffs are visible regardless of where I have the view set in the primary window

    Secondary Monitor (Middle)

    • 1920x1080 is vertical as I use it that way with work and coding, but practical for stacking secondary windows and information (Area QNH, ATCAssist, etc).  ATIS window is not shown, but that is displayed where the Arrival windows are, or top of the screen, or wherever I feel like that day!

    VSCS Monitor (Left)

    • 1024x768
    • A old POS screen, cost me $10. It's a touchscreen so I use it for the VSCS, and sometimes have Vatspy behind so I can see 'big picture' with a tap. It also has the Sup window which will show the source of the last voice transmission (for all you cats out there)

    Other

    • Custom keyboard profile for Logitech keyboard to illuminate vatSys relevant keys in relevant colours (you can see F5 is red - that's Text comms. Additionally F6 pulses red as the 'contact me' key.)
    • Coffee / beer / Wine / Gin

vatSys has enabled me to get back into controlling after a long break - it is 'different' so you have to learn how to use it - it is designed that you primarily interact with aircraft via the tracks not strips, but the built in smarts provide a massive reduction in "administration" - assigning alts, routes, dealing with non-radar, etc is SOOOO much easier.  Rerouting by 'drawing' the route on the AIS makes resolving CLAMs so much easier, as does just selecting 'Direct ...' from the track menu.

So much additional information is passed between controllers (additional notes fields) it is great for coord, and has a beautifully integrated VSCS for managing frequencies and coordination comms.

If you haven't switched to vatSys because it's a 'change', I can only say do it ASAP. It's not 'hard' to get started, read the quickstart info at Docs (virtualairtrafficsystem.com)

  3. Early WorldFlight, the areas may have had no local ATC, or none online, so globally providing it ourselves was a necessity.  This has since changed :)

The only downside is the occasional 'sorry in real world we need to wait 10 minutes between departures' or 'all the stands are full so the airport is closed'.

A friend who flys in VATUSA reckons ENR is asking pilots to change to APP, and then TWR yet the pilot can’t see either position.  So it is making things slightly confusing, although IRW we don’t have a list of frequencies displayed for us.

Well technically IRL the frequencies are on the charts... ;) ...and the controller should give the frequency I hope - otherwise... bad controller! :)

Like not hearing the noise when you join a voice room, I think we have some crutches we have become used to; and most were a result of technical limitations.

It will take a few weeks for people to get used to the change ('Change Management' anyone? :) ) but in 6 months we'll all wonder why there was any issue.
