New Decade, New Projects - Controller Training Bulletin
    6th Edition - December/January 2020

Welcome back to the new and improved version of the 'Controller Training Bulletin'. From everyone at the ATC Training Department, we hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable break. Once again, I hope that you enjoy the new bulletin and make sure you write feedback. I'd like to hear your opinions and thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Cam Tyson

    VATPAC ATC Graduates

The VATPAC ATC Training Department would like to congratulate the following people who have gone through the training system in the last two months and earnt themselves a new rating or endorsement.

    Enroute (C1): Angus Mckenzie,

TMA (S3):  Bill Teale, Stephen Harrington,

TWR (S2): Cian Ryan, Jamieson Battersby, Couper Galea, Charlie Meyr.

    S3 & C1 Procedural Tower Content

In Quarter 1, the ATC Training Department has been hard at work to ensure correct training for Procedural Towers.

In the Approach/TMA (S3) course, the Procedural Tower content is ready for aspiring TMA controllers. Both the VATPAC Board and the ATC Training Team have noticed that there was a lack of knowledge in Procedural Towers and what they are. To combat this, the ATC Training Team has placed the Procedural Tower course in the TMA course as well. This now means that Approach/TMA students who haven’t previously gained a ‘Procedural Tower Rating’ before commencing the TMA course will now be required to complete the procedural tower course theory (not the exam) before gaining access to the TMA exam. That being said, if a TMA student wishes to complete the Procedural Tower exam and gain their Procedural Tower Endorsement while studying or mentoring during TMA training, they can do so if they wish.

In the Enroute (C1) course, new Procedural Tower content has also been added. You’ll find this new page called ‘Coordination with a Procedural Tower’ under Study Guide 2, ATC Coordination. This teaches our enroute trainees about how to inform a Procedural Tower about inbound aircraft and how to give arrival details to the inbound aircraft.

You can read all about it at the VATPAC ATC Academy, https://academy.vatpac.org/

More work by two members of the ATC Training Team is also on the way through Q1 and Q2 2020 for Procedural Towers. Stay tuned in future bulletins to see their progress.

What's Happening in the Department at the Moment?

Something VATPAC has never seen before is coming, but what could it be?

You heard it here first. Something BIG is coming to VATPAC airspace.

Make sure you look at the NOTAMs forum and VATPAC website under https://vatpac.org/controllers/authorisations.

    Updating Mentoring and Assessment Scenarios

The heads of the ATC Training Team are hard at work on updating mentoring and assessment scenarios. Currently, Ryan has updated the files to the latest AIRAC. This should help modernize the files to bring them into 2020. We are also updating the Tower Assessment Files, SOP's and Candidate Information to bring them into the new format. Some of the aircraft and routes are very much out of date, hence why we're updating it. This can take a while so please have patience with us on this.

    Future Opportunities
The ATC training team isn’t currently looking for mentors, however, don't forget you can register your interest to become a mentor for the next mentoring applications at any time by emailing Ryan at [email protected].

  2. On behalf of the entire ATC Training Team, I would like to wish all members a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

I would like to take this time to thank all the dedicated volunteers in the ATC Training Team for the great work that they've poured into their roles within the last 12 months.

This year the ATC training department won't be closed for the Christmas and New Year Period in 2019. However, to ensure that the ATC Training Team get to spend time with their family and friends there are no expectations for them to mentor, assess or perform administrative tasks over the Late December to Early January period. This means you may need to wait a little longer than usual for a response to your training requests.

Thank you for your understanding & seasons greetings,

    Cam

  3. Hi All,

In the next couple of weeks, I'll be making my way back to Oceania and I'll be spending some time over the Christmas and New Year break in the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne. I would like to put as many names to faces as I can while I'm in Australia! The dates I'll be on the Sunshine Coast are from the 22nd of December to the 29th and I'll be in Melbourne from the 30th to the 1st of January. I'll also be in Canberra roughly from the 20th of January (still booking it so more to come on that).

I'll have more details on dates closer to the time as I have to plan around family plans for Christmas, a wedding and finishing my time in the UK.

If you can make it post below, send me an email or flick me a message on any social media platform!

I really would love to meet as many of you as I can.

  4. Hi Joel,

    Thanks for your enquiry.

Did you add the frequency through the stand alone AFV client? Sometimes the ATIS in VATPAC airspace is quite touch and go and only works sometimes.

    Controller Training Bulletin is back!

    5th Edition - November 2019

Welcome back to the new and improved version of the 'Controller Training Bulletin'. When browsing the forums I saw that in 2014 Greg Barber had a controller training bulletin running, so I wanted to bring this back and update it slightly to keep everyone up to date with everything ATC training. From STATS to tips and tricks you'll be able to find it all here in the bulletin. I hope you enjoy the bulletin and I'd like to see any feedback on how we can make the newsletter better. The reason that this is posted and will continue to be posted on the forums is that I hope the bulletin will continue to make healthy discussions about anything ATC and ATC Training. At the moment I plan to write the bulletin bi-monthly (with some special exceptions for special occasions), but will reevaluate to see if we have the news in the department to keep the bulletin fresh with new content. Once again I hope that you enjoy the new bulletin and make sure you write feedback as I'd like to hear your opinions.

    Thanks,

    Cam Tyson

    Procedural Towers

Are you an S2 and bored of controlling Class C towers? Not ready to do your S3 but want to continue learning?

Look no further! Did you know that VATPAC offers a 'Procedural Tower' endorsement? But what is a Procedural Tower?

A 'Procedural Tower' is a non-radar tower environment and VATPAC offers a 'Procedural Tower' course which will teach you the principles and the correct techniques of Procedural Tower Control and it will provide you with the training to safely and efficiently move traffic in and out of the control area.

Sounds like you? Head to the VATPAC ATC Academy to get started!

Please note that S3 ratings and above are allowed to control all procedural towers in VATPAC Airspace.

What's Happening in the Department at the Moment?

    Changes from Audio for VATSIM

AFV is well and truly underway and in full swing now and because of AFV coming into effect, we've had to make some changes to the way we do things and some of the content. So far the training department is working hard on updating the ATC training website including the tower and enroute courses, and mentoring checklists to make sure that our mentors are providing the correct training for all students so they're ready for the network and AFV. We're also working on updating our assessment checklists to make sure that our assessor's aren't checking competencies that are no longer required and on top of this we're updating our assessment SOP's and candidate information booklets to make them up to date and removing all unnecessary information that has been made irrelevant since the introduction of AFV. We're also updating the training academy to make sure that all the content is relevant as well. For instance, we're working on updating the ATIS module on the tower course and parts of the enroute course to incorporate phraseology and understanding of the transceiver range that has been introduced with AFV. We have also made brand new YouTube videos on setting up with AFV and setting up Euroscope 3.1d. More information on the new YouTube channel can be found below in this bulletin.

Once again on behalf of Cam, Will, Ryan and the rest of the training team, we thank you for continued patience and we find and correct errors. If you find any errors or information you believe needs to be updated please contact Will, Deputy Director, Administration at [email protected] OR if you find anything you believe that needs to updated in the mentoring or assessment phase of training, please bring this up with you mentor or contact Ryan, Deputy Director, ATC Standards at [email protected]

Please don't forget to report any coverage issues with AFV or ask questions about AFV by going to the AFV section on the VATPAC forums. Alternatively, you can contact Harrison, Director, Operations at [email protected]

    Future Opportunities

The ATC training team within the next couple of months are looking to open applications for a position of a tower mentor so make sure you keep checking the forums. Also, don't forget you can register your interest to become a mentor for the next time mentoring applications are open by emailing Cam or Ryan at [email protected] or [email protected].

    VATPAC Training Youtube Videos

We have moved our VATPAC Training Videos to the new VATPAC Youtube Channel here.

Training Content is being added as we find the time and we plan to either redo or upload videos from the old channel to make them more up to date with the current systems and phraseology.

  6. Hello all,

It is with regret that I advise the community that Arjun has decided to step down as a Senior Instructor effective immediately due to real-world commitments.

I would like to take this time to say a massive thank you on behalf of everyone at VATPAC and from the training department for the massive amount of work that you've done Arjun, you've been a keystone in this department for a long time, training and assessing. It's a shame to see you go but I know we'll see you soon.

  7. Further to this.

Just got another email with some even more positive feedback about Bill!

Message: Bill who was controlling YSCB_TWR this evening did a very good job. He had 3 in the pattern and was controlling very realistically. I was flying a slower aircraft and he did the realistic thing to do - Extend their upwind. He was very clear, easy to understand and most importantly he didn't have any anger if someone asked for him to repeat. - Many controllers get mad when you ask for a repeat.

Well done mate its great to see such great feedback keep up the amazing work @William Teale

Such great feedback @Tyler Boyd! Well done and once again it's so good to see such great feedback about our controllers from the community! Keep it up

Message 1: Just wanted to say that one of your Air Traffic Controllers (Corey Manning) is one of the friendliest and most helpful ATCs I've been able to experience communicating with. I and many others I know appreciate his efforts to provide the best experience possible for all pilots flying through his airspace and we'd like you to acknowledge him for his actions.

    Message 2: Awesome ATC services

Well done @Corey Manning great to see such awesome feedback from the community about our S2 controllers! Keep it up!!

  10. Hello All,

Please join me in congratulating Matt Kelly who has joined the training department starting as a Trainee TMA Mentor.

Matt's experience flying turboprops day to day and his past teaching experience will provide not just the training department, but, VATPAC as a whole with many benefits I'm sure.

We look forward to seeing what Matt can bring to the team. We are sure that he will do a great job of training our newest generation of controllers.

Please also join me in congratulating Harrison Scott who has been upgraded to an I1 and joining the instructing team as a Trainee Instructor!

Harrison has shown passion and drive within the department and therefore, with Harrison joining the instructing team I'm sure we'll see the drive and passion that he shows in his students continue as he carries out assessments in the not too distant future.

Welcome to your new roles gents.
