Hello Everyone, Firstly, I would like to take the time to thank David Zhong who has maintained a stable community for our members to enjoy. Without his continued efforts I’m sure the division and the community would not be in the place it is today. Today David and I met to discuss current affairs of VATPAC and what current projects are underway after which I was given the responsibility of Division Director. As an introduction to those of you who don’t not know me, my name is Callum Strawbridge. I’ve worked in the Aviation industry for over 5 years and have been involved in Aviation far longer. My VATSIM Journey began in January 2011 where I’ve held positions within VATSIM Australia Pacific (ATC Training, Operations & Events), VATSIM South East Asia (Training) and VATSIM (Social Media). In the preceding years that followed my appointment, the VATPAC community has been subjected to some difficult times. With this in mind came my motive to apply for the Director Of Division position as I have first hand experience and knowledge on the events which have occurred and from that have a vision in mind to ensure the future growth and stability of the division. I want you to know that I have been through all of the recent events with you, I understand what went wrong, what didn’t work and what we can do better. It’s important to note though that I cannot achieve this overnight and cannot achieve it alone. The decision to apply for Director Of Division is something that I and the people who applied as well as the selection committee doesn’t take lightly and I would personally like to thank all who applied and those who took the time to Interview and select. So, What is going to happen from here? As I mentioned above, as a community, we have been through some turbulent times over the past few years. This has lead to plenty of questions about the leadership of VATPAC, VATOCE and even VATSIM. I have been involved in a lot of these events and can safely say, they are over. I have full confidence in the team at VATSIM and VATSIM Oceania, having seen many of the changes happening behind the scenes. I am also excited to work with Alan and the VATPAC Board to bring the division back to the friendly, helpful, energetic and professional community it used to be. I will be working with the VATPAC Board to ensure each department has a plan for the next 12 months. This will ensure we stay on target to give the community the best service we can. We will be filling the recently announced resignations as quickly as possible to ensure each department has strong leadership. If you are interested in applying for these positions, once they open, please put your hand up. I would love to see some people putting their hands up who haven’t before or perhaps people who used to hold roles at VATPAC. I also believe one of the best things we can do to show you that we care is being more transparent. I would like to start by bringing back the VATPAC Newsletter. Once a month, we will publish the newsletter to the mailing list (available on the VATPAC Homepage) and forums which will include an update on what your Divisional team is working on. It is also an opportunity for us to get out information and changes from VATSIM and VATSIM Oceania in a more interactive format. I will be working with the VATPAC Board and will update you with more information on the newsletter in the future. In the next couple of months, we will also be publishing a survey for all previous, current and potential future members. The goal of this survey will be to create a plan for the future that is in touch with the community. I'll publish further information on the survey soon and hope we can get as many responses as possible from the membership, the results of which will be published. Where do I see the community? I've changed quite a lot over the years. I started out with a pretty big ego (a common trait). I’m not going to deny I didn’t cause some trouble in my early days but having grown up, I have changed into the easy going, laid back person I am today. I live life as it comes and treat everyone equally. I want to see this community return to the way it was when I started, supportive and forgiving. I feel there is a word that keeps popping into my mind that sums up how I believe the VATPAC community should be. Mateship. Defined: “Mateship is an Australian cultural idiom that embodies equality, loyalty and friendship.” I know that we have lots of people in the community of different ages, backgrounds, languages and maturity levels. It costs nothing to be kind to everyone. Something that popped into my head while on holiday (I’m currently in Hawaii) was how you can go anywhere around the world, and spot an Aussie. You can say G’day, have a chat, and instantly, that sense of mateship is there. I would love for VATPAC to get back to a place where that is the case. That relies on everyone working together, being friendly, offering to share knowledge and help each other out. Finally, I know everyone says this, but I genuinely want you to know. My door will always be open for everyone, regardless of who you are. I look forward to working with each and every person of this community we love to make VATPAC the great place it once was, again. Sincerely, Callum

I am happy to report that the application process to appoint VATPAC's new Director Of Division has been completed. It was a hard fought contest with 2 candidates nearly impossible to separate. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the new DD is Callum Strawbridge, I wish him well in his new appointment and I am sure the community will get behind him and support him as he works with the Board to improve VATPAC for all it's members. I must also thank the selection panel for the work they did in trying to find the best possible candidate. Thanks must also go to David for stepping in at a time of crisis in an acting role. He settled the Division down and has brought plenty of new structure and confidence to the board, I personally am very grateful to David for this and it will also set up Callum in a good position for moving forward. I would like to wish David well in his future endeavors. There will now be a short transition period where David can hand over to Callum. Thanks Alan

Please join me in congratulating Will Smart who has been appointed as the Deputy Director, ATC Administration on the ATC Training Department. Will brings a significant amount of administrative experience and leadership knowledge gained from the real world which he brings into this crucial position on the team. Will has also been a Mentor on the Training Team for a while now and his knowledge of controlling will certainly help him in this role. For those who are requesting Exams or asking us questions, he will be on the other end of the training email responding to all your emails. On behalf of the entire training team, we look forward to working with Will even more in the future and hope that he will help our community and training department grow.

It's with great pleasure that I announce Cam Tyson has been appointed as Director, ATC Training. Cam has been a member of the VATPAC and VATNZ training teams over the past 3 years, holding roles as Mentor, Instructor and most recently, Deputy Director, ATC Administration. Throughout his time in ATC Training, he's helped many students achieve their ratings and has always been committed to sharing his knowledge and passion of ATC. Cam has great ambitions for the department which I'm sure he'll discuss in the near future. Daniel Martin is leaving the training department and VATPAC Board due to real world commitments. I'd like to take a moment to thank Daniel, on behalf of the VATPAC Board and community, for all of his hard work. Without the hundreds of hours he dedicated to ensuring all members got quick responses to emails, ensuring all the administrative documentation was filed correctly and for creating and maintaining such a fantastic team of staff, the ATC Training Department would not be as successful as it is now. Welcome to the team Cam!

It's with great pleasure that I announce Harrison Scott has been appointed by the VATPAC Board as Director, Operations. Harrison has been a member of staff at VATPAC for some time now holding roles in the ATC Training, Operations and I.T departments. During his time on the Board as the I.T Director, Harrison gained an important insight into the day to day operations of VATPAC which, alongside his recent work in Operations, has adequately prepared him to take on a role in the Operations Department. He'll be working closely with Peter Story while a transition occurs. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Story for stepping in as Acting Director. Peter not only kept his own work progressing but also took on the workload of the Operations Director and saw through several projects over the last couple of months including Local Instructions updates, AIRAC1907 + 1909 and work on the Euroscope controller client updater. Peter will stay on-board the team as Deputy Director, AIS, supporting the team as we continue to update and bring new content to the community. Congratulations and welcome to the team Harrison.

Hi All, Please see the following announcement from the VATSIM Board of Governors. On Monday July 15,2019 at 00:00z an updated version of the VATSIM Code of Conduct will come into effect. This update has been under development for several months. The updates modernize the Code of Conduct to reflect the many years of change on the network. The general intent remains unchanged - members are expected behave in a manner that is respectful and tolerant of others while enjoying their time on VATSIM. The New Code of Conduct can be found at http://vats.im/coc While many of the items in the Code of Conduct have been tweaked or reworded for clarity, most of them are rules that you already know and abide by. Every member should read though the new code of conduct as everyone will be held to it, but here are some of the biggest changes. Members are required to register for VATSIM using their full real names, but now may connect to VATSIM using their full real name, a common shortening of their real name, their given name only, or their VATSIM Certificate ID number VATSIM Members may stream content utilizing VATSIM and persons who intentionally disrupt a stream are subject to immediate suspension. Pilots will be required to be able to comply with hold short instructions, and flying a speed, altitude and heading assigned by Air Traffic Controllers A specific set of restricted callsigns as well as limitations on recreating flights or organizing events recognizing real world disasters or tragedies While Air Traffic Control positions are generally “first come, first served;” a division may set policy for booking a position ahead of time within reasonable limits Please visit the VATSIM General Discussion Forums to ask any questions you might have about any part of the new Code of Conduct. Thank you for your continued participation in VATSIM and we look forward to many more improvements within the coming months! Best Regards, VATSIM’s Board of Governors

Over the past few days, the VATSIM Australia server had been experiencing issues and was intermittently unavailable. After a few modifications to how both the server and the VATPAC web server are managed, we believe to have resolved the issues. More specifically, the connection drops were purely to do with the connection between the server and the outside world. The bandwidth pipe had seemed to be overloaded by other traffic and in an effort to reduce the network traffic, the VATPAC TeamSpeak server is no longer running on the same server as the VATSIM Australia FSD server. Instead, the TeamSpeak server is running independently to these services. In regards to the future of TeamSpeak, the board is meeting in the near future to discuss VATPAC's voice communication services, including the results of the survey. Currently, the TeamSpeak is fully operational and all services are back to normal with a few quality and assurance additions in the background. If you continue to experience any issues, the rw2.vatpac.org voice server is the designated backup and will remain so in the case of any future mishaps. If you have any questions or are still having issues, please contact me at [email protected]

On Monday 22 April 2019, VATPAC received a report that a publicly-accessible part of our Moodle system ("The Academy") displayed the email addresses of registered users. These email addresses were sourced from VATSIM when a user first logged in with VATSIM SSO (Single Sign-On). Upon receiving this report, VATPAC staff immediately disabled our Moodle until the issue could be rectified. The affected parts of Moodle have been permanently disabled and service has since been restored. Am I affected? You are affected by this incident if you have an account with our Moodle system and have logged in with VATSIM SSO. Note that upgrades to our Moodle have taken place over the years and some of these upgrades reset the user database. If you have never logged into Moodle with VATSIM SSO, you are not affected. What are the impacts? If you were affected by this incident, your email address may have been displayed on a publicly-accessible page on our Moodle and visible to all Moodle users. This was an obscure page and there is no evidence to suggest that more than a few people accessed it. The page has been publicly-accessible for an unknown period of time, likely since July 2017. There is a low probability that email addresses on this page were collected by marketing agencies. There is no evidence to suggest that this occurred. However, in this event, affected persons may receive spam or other malicious emails. If you receive any suspicious emails, you are recommended to avoid opening it or any attachments or links and either delete the email or use your email providers "report spam" function. What did VATPAC do in response? VATPAC took the following actions in response to this incident: disabled the Moodle system immediately to prevent immediate access to the affected page changed Moodle settings to prevent access to the affected page restored service to Moodle undertook an investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident What is VATPAC doing to prevent this from happening again? VATPAC has implemented the following measures to prevent similar incidents: changed Moodle settings to prevent access to the affected page reviewed other systems to ensure that they are configured correctly reported the incident to VATSIM Who can I contact with further concerns? It's designed to test a controller’s limits with high workload into small airports, with VFR and IFR aircraft. GA Madness focuses on class D airports and this time we’ll be focusing on the sunny Sunshine Coast, Archerfield and the gateway airport to the sprawling beaches and sands of Queensland... the Gold Coast. What can I do? These airports are some of the busiest airports in Australia however, under appreciated in VATPAC. Cross the Ditch 16: Winter 2019 The days have grown short and winter has returned to Australasia. From New Zealand's snow-covered South Island to the beaches of Australia's Gold Coast, from wild and windy Wellington to cosmopolitan Melbourne and bustling Sydney, aircraft everywhere are taking to the skies to Cross the Ditch! Check out the official Cross the Ditch website Apply to provide ATC Book your Flights now! View the Event Schedule Check out the Virtual Airline Leaderboard Grab the recommended add-on scenery for each of the event airports What's it all about? For twenty hours this December, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch. An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes all range from two-and-a-half to four hours flight time. Throughout the event, the Oceania region's two divisions – VATNZ and VATPAC – will be providing full ATC coverage, in the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event. This is a great opportunity to experience Oceanic flying without the need to commit to an eight-hour flight! If you're new to Oceanic Flying, our reporting tool makes taking part a breeze. Event Times This twenty hour event is timed to allow pilots from all over the world join the fun: UTC: Saturday 15th June 2019 18:00 - Sunday 16th June 2019 14:00 AEST: Sunday 16th June 2019 04:00 - Monday 17th June 2019 00:00 NZST: Sunday 16th June 2019 06:00 - Monday 17th June 2019 02:00 Waves This season's event is organised in waves. Each airport will have a three-to-four hour departure window, during which time flights will be able to leave for the next destination. As the window closes, the departure window will open at the next destination. Given each of the flights is 2.5 - 4hrs in length, the previous wave's flights will be arriving at the same airport as the next wave departs, maximising the amount of traffic at each airport. NOTE: in order to ensure that you have ATC coverage throughout your flight, you MUST fly the wave route that is active at the time of your departure. The individual routes are designed to ensure as much opposing traffic enroute as possible. Each flight passes from one Oceania division to the other, and the result is six mini-flyins over the course of twenty hours! The Waves for Cross the Ditch 16 - Winter 2019 are: Wave Flight Departure Window UTC AEST NZST 1 Christchurch (NZCH) to Sydney (YSSY) 1800-2030 0400-0630 0600-0830 2 Sydney (YSSY) to Queenstown (NZQN) (B753/A321 and smaller) 2030-0000 0630-1000 0830-1200 2a Sydney (YSSY) to Christchurch (NZCH) (Wide-body aircraft only) 2030-0000 0630-1000 0830-1200 3 Queenstown (NZQN) to Gold Coast (YBCG) (B753/A321 and smaller) 2330-0300 0930-1300 1130-1500 3a Christchurch (NZCH) to Gold Coast (YBCG) (Wide-body aircraft only) 2330-0300 0930-1300 1130-1500 4 Gold Coast (YBCG) to Wellington (NZWN) 0300-0630 1300-1630 1500-1830 5 Wellington (NZWN) to Melbourne (YMML) 0630-1000 1630-2000 1830-2200 Calling all Pilots and Controllers Flight plans are available from the Flight Plans section. It's been a busy few months for the whole developer community on VATSIM, as we speed towards release of VATSIM's new voice technology. We are also making excellent progress on other modernizations and enhancements which will ensure VATSIM remains the biggest and best online flying network. While we continue to make this progress, we have had some staff changes as well. I'm saddened to announce that Jamie Fox has recently stepped down from his role as Vice President, Network Systems due to personal commitments. Jamie has played a central part over several years in getting VATSIM's server infrastructure in order and in a stable state, as well as contributing to numerous projects across VATSIM in that time also. On behalf of the Board of Governors, I'd like to thank Jamie for his work and wish him the very best for the future. Jamie’s departure gives us an opportunity to reevaluate the needs of technical positions on the Board of Governors. While we complete that evaluation, Matt Cianfarani will execute the responsibilities of Vice President, Network Systems and Vice President, Web Services. These two roles are closely intertwined, and it makes sense that in this critical stage of our delivery of Audio for VATSIM, we have an aligned approach to launching this and other projects in the community. Aidan Stevens has been appointed Director of Web Services to assist Matt with his additional responsibilities. Aidan has been critical in the past year assisting VATSIM development assisting or taking the lead on many of our improvement projects. Thank you to both Matt and Aidan for stepping up. In tandem with this announcement, Zach Biesse-Fitton, our Vice President Technical Development, has published a blog post which gives a more detailed update on Audio for VATSIM amongst other topics. I would urge you to read it here, as it's sure to be of interest! Thank you for being a part of VATSIM. [VATSIM BOG]

Over the past few days, VATSIM's Australia based server has been experiencing connection drops. These losses in connection are temporary and only last for about 10 or so seconds before regaining connection. Loss of connection only seems to be occurring once or twice per day at irregular intervals. We are aware of the cause of the issue but due to various constraints, we are forced to look into various alternative solutions. The services affected are as follows: VATSIM Australia Service (both pilot clients and controller clients) VATPAC voice servers (rw1.vatpac.org & rw3.vatpac.org) VATPAC TeamSpeak For the majority of the time, the Australian server will work just fine, if you are having troubles and are not able to connect please try connecting to rw2.vatpac.org as this should work. If you have any questions about this feel free to contact me at [email protected]
