Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

We're back and proud to announce the next event for the Light Up series, Light up Tasmania! It is time to pull out those regional aircraft or commercial airliners and travel down to the apple isle of Australia as we attempt to provide the most realistic ATC services for you as you travel to stunning destinations that Tasmania has to offer. Travel between Hobart (and Cambridge), Launceston, Devonport, Strahan, St Helens, Flinders Island, Georgetown and Melbourne with the expectation of full ATC Services from 0400z - 0800z.

What is Light Up Tasmania?
This event revolves around one of our older events (Regionals and Twins) with the idea being to provide ATC services to more regional locations around the country. Lets be honest, our regional towns don’t get the love like the big cities do, so lets change that! Travel to those often forgotten destinations and provide controllers and pilots alike a different challenge. A challenge to fly into a unfamiliar location and try an approach other than the famous ILS approach. Because we know so many of you would love a longer flight we decided to include Melbourne in the event.
We encourage you to use Hobart's second airport Cambridge YCBG for use on regional routes. Cambridge is the home of Airlines of Tasmania which fly many RPT VFR and IFR routes around Tasmania as well as doing charter tourism operations to places like Melaleuca in Tasmania's south with their fleet of Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander, C172, C206.

This flight over flies the WA end of the Indian Pacific rail line as it traverses the Nullabor Plain.
NOTE : FSX/P3D pilots will require the Alan Blencowe WA scenery (refer to scenery section below) to ensure there is a departure airport in their respective scenery. For those FSX/P3D pilots that did not save their position as a flight at the conclusion of the flight to Caiguna an alternative means of positioning the aircraft will need to be sought. The Alan Blencowe Caiguna scenery is not included in the default scenery database and therefore is unavailable as a location at which to spawn. Pilots will need to spawn at a nearby airport such as Esperence and then use the in-built map to drag the aircraft position to the approx area of the desired location ensuring they are airborne and flying and once returned to the sim locate and land at Caiguna in preparation for the flight.

VATPAC Invites you back to another shuttle event! This time we thought we would concentrate on the east coast and head north! Fly from Sydney inbound Cairns expecting full ATC Services from 0600z - 1200z!

What is a 'Shuttle' Event?
A shuttle event is where we invite Pilots and controllers to fly from a defined departure location, inbound a nominated arrival airport with the expectation of full ATC along the way!
We invite you to depart from Sydney International Airport (YSSY) between 0600z - 0800z inbound to Cairns International Airport (YBCS) as we attempt to test out our talented controlling team! Below you will find the recommended coastal and direct routing for this event, as well as the expected SID & STARs for your flight.

Route:
There are two different recommended routes you can take for this event. Aircraft routing via the coastal route can expect the eastern runway (16L/34R) and aircraft routing via the non-coastal route can expect the western runway (16R/34L). Airport Charts can be found here
If you are feeling like you wish to explore what the East Coast has to offer while under the control of competent controllers, feel free to fly via our coastal route which darts around the coast. If you have always wanted to take a look at what it looks like but never had the time, this is for you!

Coastal Route: (3hr 30min)
ROUTE: TESAT ENTRA H185 GOMOL Q69 ITIDE Q295 GUDSO Q67 UPOLO CS
SID: ENTRA8 (34R), KEVIN6 ENTRA (16L)
STAR: UPOLO8A,B,V,Z (15), HENDO8A BARIA (33)
If you are feeling a little more traditional, feel free to file via the usual routing for this event!
Non-Coastal Route: (3hr 15min)
ROUTE: TESAT RIC H76 NBR H105 HACHI Q165 VOMPA Q499 NONUM CS
SID: DEENA7RIC(16R), RIC5(34L)

Departure Window:
ATC will be provided at Sydney Airport from 0600z - 0800z. To ensure you receive ATC Services for the full length of your flight, it is recommended you depart in this window!

Arrival into CS:
Pilots have the option of flying either the ILS, VOR, RNAV or Visual Approaches into Cairns if weather conditions permit. ATC will assign the approach type nominated in the ATIS but you may request a different approach type if you are up for the challenge. ATC will be provided at Cairns from 0900z - 1200z.
We ask that you are familiar with the approach type you select, including intercept and following the DME Arc to intercept the approach. If you are unfamiliar with these operations you can request vectors from the Approach controller to ensure you capture the localiser.

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

      Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot.
