Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

By far the most popular of our regular weekly events, on any given Milk Run Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with our Spilled Milk Run Monday events, details of which can be found on the Spilled Milk Run page, the Milk Run invites you to fly in any direction between Sydney and Melbourne and all destinations in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Prefer to control? We recommend getting in early. ATC positions on Milk Run Monday are often scarce so definitely worth being an early bird.
Traffic levels traditionally start to pick up at around 7:30pm AEST / AEDT and generally peak between 8:30pm and 9:30pm AEST / AEDT.

It's last minute but with such a fast changing real world environment, we need to move quickly to keep up! Welcome to the first in a new line of events, Friday Night Live!

We're bringing you some Friday Night Entertainment that the pubs and clubs can't! Visit a new location in VATPAC airspace each week which will be staffed to the rafters with ATC! Pilots, plan multiple sectors into/from the airspace or do a long haul and finish of your flight with full ATC. The possibilities are endless!

This Week

This week, we'll be kicking off in Sydney! With so many controllers and pilots at home, will you be able to help us keep Sydney as busy as it once was? Expect ATC across the Sydney area including our featured airports this week: Sydney YSSY; Camden - YSCN; YSBK - Bankstown. If there is enough controllers, our friends over at RAAFv may even be online to assist with ATC at Richmond and Williamtown (Although everyone is invited to login there).

Non Standards will be opened on a case by case basis by a Senior Staff member in accordance with the policies.

The event won't have specified start or end times as the purpose of this event is to bring all of our ATC together to provide a highly realistic experience! There'll also be members of the training department around giving everyone tips and tricks on positions they may not have controlled before! VFR, IFR, Jets and Props encouraged and welcomed!

Adelaide Non-precision Approach Night
The name says it all. Due to "ground works" at Adelaide airport all precision approaches have been temporarily decommissioned. Nothing but non-precision approaches in use for this event!

Whats the difference between a precision and non-precision approach?
Non-precision approaches provide lateral guidance (that is, heading information), but do not provide vertical guidance (i.e., altitude and/or glidepath guidance).
some example of these include;
VOR - VHF omnidirectional range NDB - Non-directional beacon RNP - Required navigation performance Precision approach systems provide both lateral (heading) and vertical (glidepath) guidance.
some examples of these include;
ILS - Instrument landing system GLS - GBAS landing system For more information on types of approaches click here.

Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Darwin. Darwin is the gateway to the Northern Territory and features a vast majority of  domestic destinations to choose from. With the recent release of MFSG Darwin scenery why not join us up north as we light up the Northern Territory capital.

The following positions will be the primary positions:

DN_TWR
DN_APP
BN-TRT_CTR

To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Darwin prior to occupying others. Remember, There are no reserved positions so if one of the above positions is available, logon!

What is Iron Mic?
Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic.
Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT)
How do we know about our progress?

Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week.

Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Cairns positions. You can do this on Facebook, Teamspeak or the forums.

VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11100

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Good Luck VATPAC!

This week we are running an Iron Mic at Darwin. Start the week off right by visiting Australia's Top End.

Welcome back to VATPAC's newest event series, Friday Night Live!

We're bringing you some Friday Night Entertainment that the pubs and clubs can't! Visit a new location or perhaps an old favourite, the possibilities are endless.

This Week

This week, we're headed back 10 years to Western Australia  Perth is busier than ever thanks to the resource market so let's see if we can beat the normal morning or evening rush and connect Perth with the rest of WA. Whether flying to one of Flukey's amazing airports, an OZx classic or simply experiencing the beautiful sights of the WA coastline, there's something for everyone.

We're looking to staff up Perth first but if there are more locations available, we'd love to see Jandakot, Karratha and Broome tower's activated to join in on the fun!

Non Standards will be opened on a case by case basis by a Senior Staff member in accordance with the policy.

The event won't have specified start or end times as the purpose of this event is to bring all of our ATC together to provide a highly realistic experience! There'll also be members of the training department around giving everyone tips and tricks on positions they may not have controlled before!

Come along and show your support!

Routes

There are two sources you can use to get routes from Perth to domestic destinations across Australia.
https://flightaware.com/ - You can search through real world flights and get the route from them here. Look for a day prior to the one being operated if the route doesn't show up for the latest day.

https://vatpac.org/pilots/pilot-tools/flight-planning/ - The VATPAC Flight Planning tool can provided limited information on routing however, should be checked for compliance with Jet/Non-Jet restrictions and currency.

ANZAC PARADE (YSSY/NZAA)
This weekend VATPAC & VATNZ have a combined event as we focus of flying across the Tasman remembering those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly between New Zealand's busiest airport (Auckland, NZAA) to Australia's busiest airport (Sydney, YSSY), as ATC aim to staff the ditch for 6 hours! If you make a quick turnaround you may even fit a return trip in. Auckland deals with around 180,000 movements a year while Sydney gets a staggering 330,000 a year which is an average of 34 movements an hour. Everyone get your aircraft out of the hanger and lets get more movements than the real airports!

Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
