WorldFlight 2020
It's that time of year again!

What is WorldFlight?
WorldFlight is one of the longest running events on VATSIM to date. It's a week long event with plenty of aircraft who make their way from Sydney, around the world and back again, all in the name of charity. Aircraft will depart Sydney on the 1st at 8:00am AEDT (2100z) and arrive a week later on the 7th at 8:35pm AEDT (0935z). With full ATC along the way, all VATSIM members are invited along to join in from home.
For more information on WorldFlight or to make a donation, please head to the WorldFlight website.
https://www.worldflight.com.au/

ATC requirements
Although World Flight has a team of Global controllers to mange the traffic on the legs outside of for the rest of the world, who may not have the active controllers to manage the traffic, VATPAC is looking for controllers available for the departure and arrival days to manage the traffic within our airspace.

ATC applications
To apply for ATC please find the applications page below.

Navigation : Pilots familiar with the area can navigate visually, for those less familiar the accompanying GPS Flightplan is the recommended method of navigating the flight plan.
Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

This Weeks Flight on 4th November 2020 finds us in Japan continuing a scenic tour. This flight includes Hashima Island a fortress island, City of Nagasaki where the 2nd atomic bomb was dropped and a few famous bridges, City of Fukuoka arriving in Ashiya.
Scenery Suggested:
With the plethora of simulation platforms now being flown it has become tedious to make scenery recommendations so scenery is left to the choice of each pilot.
However in the case of Japan and MSFS2020 it recommended to download scenery for City of Nagasaki and City of Fukuoka from https://flightsim.to/ . Other MSFS2020 scenery is part of the standard package.
Most flights in X-plane 11 will also benefit from improved mesh which can be obtained from https://www.alpilotx.net/ There is HD and UHD available depending on region. Just check each download page and locate the relevant tile/co-ordinate, download and install as usual. Ensure that the mesh folder is placed in the correct order at bottom of Scenery_packs.ini file.
Aircraft Suggested: Low and slow Any capable of 120 kias i.e. C172 or Robin DR40
Comms: Unicom 122.80 unless instructed by ATC
Flight Details: RJDA-RJFA
Weather: Real time weather, fair weather if conditions are not suitable.

This Weeks Flight on 11th November 2020 finds us in the Channel Islands, UK doing a tour of the islands as well as encroaching into France.
Flight based on a suggestion by David Grant (Vatsim United Kingdom)
If "channel control" is on they might control you for the entire flight.  London West might also cover the area but is rarely online.
Scenery Suggested:

In collaboration with PCF and the Indonesia VACC, VATPAC is pleased to delighted to invite you to the Guam -> Darwin Shuttle! Fly from Guam to Darwin with full ATC from 2000z on the 21st of November 2020, until 0400z on the 22nd of November 2020!

What is a 'Shuttle' Event?
A shuttle event is where we invite pilots and controllers to fly from the defined departure airport, to the defined arrival airport with the expectation of full ATC along the way! On this occasion, we have teamed up with PCF in order to provide you with an international event!
We invite you to depart from Guam International Airport (PGUM) between 2000z and 2200z on the 21st of November 2020, inbound to Darwin International Airport (YPDN), as we attempt to test out our talented controlling team! Below you will find the recommended route between the two airfields, as well as information for your departure and arrival!

Route:
VATPAC, PCF and Indonesia VACC recommend the following route when flying between Guam and Darwin.
PGUM -> YPDN:
ROUTE: PGUM UNZ A450 LOEBB 08E40 06E39 00S37 BIK W65 ZDVEE FOLOT BUTPA A461 ADKUL UY95 DONYA DN
DEPARTURE: Radar vectors to UNZ
STAR: DONYA7A (11/29)
Remember the departure slot for PGUM is between 2000z and 2200z!

Departure From Guam:
Pilots departing from Guam International Airport (PGUM), can expect to depart from either runways 06L/R or runways 24L/R, depending on wind direction and traffic levels. Pilots are to expect radar vectors after departure towards the UNZ TACAN, or a waypoint on their route that is nearby.

Arrival Into Darwin:
Upon Arrival into Darwin International Airport (YPDN), pilots can expect the DONYA7(A/U) followed by a choice of VOR, NDB, ILS, RNAV or Visual approach (Weather Permitting) into either runway 11 or 29. ATC will assign the approach type nominated in the ATIS but you may request a different approach type if you are up for the challenge. ATC will be provided at Darwin between 0100z and 0400z.
We ask that you are familiar with the approach type you select. If you are unfamiliar with these operations you can request vectors from the Approach controller to ensure you capture the localiser.
Click here to see a DONYA7A chart. Please note: The DONYA7U arrival is virtually the same as the DONYA7A, it simply links to a different approach!

ATC:
ATC within VATPAC airspace for this event will be rostered according to the positions nominated below. Applications are now open, click here to apply.

Welcome back to one of VATPAC's newest events - East Coast Connect! Whether you like to fly IFR in a commercial jet or small turboprop, or VFR in a smaller private aircraft, this is the event for you. Enjoy the beautiful scenery that NSW and the Gold Coast offer within your simulators!

What is East Coast Connect?
East Coast Connect is a new event that offers two different types of events every four weeks. Running every second Saturday, the first round is a connection between Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast. In the second round, we connect Brisbane & Cairns!
Pilots can expect ATC to be online between the nominated airfields from 0730z - 1130z!
ATC can expect to apply their sequencing skills to generate a pleasant flow of traffic between the nominated airfields.
East Coast Connect occurs every second Saturday. In the event a major event occurs on the same day, East Coast Connect will not run. Keep an eye out on the VATPAC Event Announcements for future renditions of this event!

We're back and proud to announce the next event for the Light Up series, Light up South Australia! It is time to pull out those regional aircraft or commercial airliners and explore the wine country of Australia as we attempt to provide the most realistic ATC services for you as you travel to stunning destinations that South Australia has to offer. Travel between Adelaide (YPAD), Parafield (YPPF), Port Augusta (YPAG), Port Lincoln (YPLC), Mount Gambier (YMTG) Ceduna (YCDU) and Olympic Dam (YOLD) plus many more with the expectation of full services from 0400z - 0800z.

What is Light Up South Australia?
This event revolves around one of our older events (Regionals and Twins) with the idea being to provide ATC services to more regional locations around the country. Our regional towns don’t get the love like the big cities do, so let's change that! Travel to those often-forgotten destinations and provide controllers and pilots alike a different challenge. A chance to fly into an unfamiliar location and try an approach other than the usual ILS approach.
During this event, you will receive an Outside Control Airspace Service at a majority of our airfields from the overlying ENR Controller. Pilots can expect the following service types depending on the class of airspace.

We encourage you to use Adelaide's secondary airport Parafield (YPPF) - Australia's third busiest airport by ground movements for use with shorter routes. Parafield is the home of many small aircraft which fly heaps of VFR and IFR routes around the south as well as housing operational historic aircraft!

Suggested Major Routes:
South Australia has so much to offer and explore! Whether your flight is high or low, fast or slow, there are plenty of routes to fly. Find some of our suggested routes below, bearing in mind that Pilots are more than welcome to fly other routes from other destinations!

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

You know it’s the end of the month when Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This Easter, we are bringing back the popular Easter Egg Hunt! On the 1st of April, depart Sydney in search of 3 easter eggs at three differrent airports inside the great state of New South Wales.
The first pilot to identify, fly to and land at each airport wins!
Hints for where these airports will be released on the VATPAC Discord.

      Edition Details:
The Idea of this Edition of Spilled Milk Run Monday is similar to the Easter Egg Hunt we did last year. From 0800z, one hint will be released every 30 minutes on the VATPAC Discord providing 3 different hints, one for each of the three different airport locations. Pilots then depart Sydney in search for the airports. Once a pilot lands at the airport they believe the Easter egg is at, they take a screenshot and post it in the VATPAC Discord's Event Channel. The first pilot to correctly land and take a screenshot at each airport wins!
Pilots and controllers must follow the relevant criteria below in order to be eligible to win a prize!

      Edition Details:
thanks to the generous donations of some of the VATPAC staff, there will be four prizes up for grabs during the Easter egg hunt. The prizes are as follows:
Pilots: 3 x  €10 ($15AUD) simMarket Gift Vouchers - 1 per airport Controllers: 1 x €10 ($15AUD) simMarket Gift Voucher - all eligible controllers will be added to a draw and randomly selected to win the prize. In order to be eligible to win one of the prizes pilots and controllers must follow the following procedures:
      Pilots:
All pilots must depart Sydney (YSSY) and remain online and connected for the duration of the flight Pilots must not use any sim rate enhancement at any time. Doing so will automatically result in disqualification. Pilots must follow all controller instructions and not take purposeful shortcuts or refuse sequencing to try and shorten the duration of their flight. VATPAC events staff, senior staff and directors are not eligible to win pilot prizes. Pilots must not use high performance aircraft to reduce their flights duration. This includes fighter jets, high altitude / speed airliners such as the Concorde, or any other aircraft purposely chosen for an unrealistic speed advantage. Upon arrival at the chosen airfield, pilots must post a screenshot on the VATPAC discord #events channel showing their simulator, and a tracking software (Volanta, Simaware) with the flight plan showing the whole flight and tag an event coordinator. Pilots are only eligible to receive one (1) prize. Pilot can only depart Sydney once the first hint is released. All flights to correct airports will be closely tracked by Event Coordinators. If a member of the events team believes your flight was not in observance of the above criteria, or that you had any form of unfair advantage, they may deem you ineligible to receive a prize.

      Controllers:
All rostered and unrostered controllers who contributed for at least one hour will be considered for the prize Controllers not active for the duration of their rostered period (without a valid excuse) will be ineligible for the draw Controllers who already received a pilot prize will not be eligible for the draw At the close of the event the winners of each category will be announced.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
      BN-ARL_CTR ML-YWE_CTR ML-BIK_CTR
SY_APP SY_TWR SY_GND SY_DEL *Non-Standard positions* will be available for opening depending on traffic levels. They may only be opened once all of the Standard positions are filled. Please see a member of Staff, or a C3 rated controller to be granted permission to open a non-standard position. Please review the controller NOTAM for detailed information about which Non-Standard Positions are automatically authorized.

This Weeks Flight for Wednesday 3rd April 2024 takes us to the Caribbean flying an island hop from Point-a-Pitre in French Gaudeloupe (TFFR) to the famous Princess Juliana Int'l in the Netherland Antilles (TNCM).
Highlights will be two of the most dangerous airfields in the world, Gustaf III Airport (TFFJ) on St Barthelemy Island with a very steep arrival and the other being Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport on the island of SABA which is only 400 metres in length.
Approaches in to Gustaf III Airport (TFFJ) can use either rwy 10 (left hand pattern) or rwy 28 (also left hand pattern). The arrival using rwy 10 is very steep which makes it quite dangerous. NB: rwy 28 can only be used for full stop arrivals so any T&G's will have to use rwy 10, the steep one). Airport is open to all traffic however note aircraft type required. Refer link for details.
Approaches into SABA (TNCS) can use either rwy 12 (Lefthand pattern) or Rwy 30 (Right hand pattern). Runways both have an “X” at each end however this just represents the fact that the airport is closed to all but specific licenced traffic. Refer link for details.
