Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

Welcome back to one of VATPAC's newest events - East Coast Connect! Whether you like to fly IFR in a commercial jet or small turboprop, or VFR in a smaller private aircraft, this is the event for you. Enjoy the beautiful scenery that Queensland has to offer within your simulators!

What is East Coast Connect?
East Coast Connect is a new event that offers two different types of events every four weeks. Running every second Saturday, the first round is a connection between Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast. In the second round, we connect Brisbane & Cairns!
Pilots can expect ATC to be online between the nominated airfields from 0800z - 1200z!
ATC can expect to apply their sequencing skills to generate a pleasant flow of traffic between the nominated airfields.
East Coast Connect occurs every second Saturday. In the event a major event occurs on the same day, East Coast Connect will not run. Keep an eye out on the VATPAC Event Announcements for future renditions of this event!

Routes:
This week, we are flying between Brisbane International Airport (YBBN) and Cairns international Airport (YBCS)

By far the most popular of our regular weekly events, on any given Milk Run Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with our Spilled Milk Run Monday events, details of which can be found on the Spilled Milk Run page, the Milk Run invites you to fly in any direction between Sydney and Melbourne and all destinations in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Prefer to control? We recommend getting in early. ATC positions on Milk Run Monday are often scarce so definitely worth being an early bird.
Traffic levels traditionally start to pick up at around 7:30pm AEST / AEDT and generally peak between 8:30pm and 9:30pm AEST / AEDT.

The original ICAO for Coffs Harbour was YSCH and this code continues to be used in default and ORBX scenery for Coffs Harbour in FSX and P3D. This code has subsequently been redesignated as YCFS and it is this that should be used when referencing Coffs Harbour airport in flightplans. X-Plane also utilises this ICAO in preference to YSCH. Simmers will need to use the appropriate code when locating and spawning at the airport in their respective simulators.
It should also be noted that the ICAO identifier for Coffs Harbour VOR/DME underwent a similar change from CH to CFS. The frequency is 117.0 in both instances. To confuse matters, the Coffs Harbour NDB stills uses designation CH and frequency 311.

Scenery Suggested:
With the plethora of simulation platforms now being flown it has become tedious to make scenery recommendations so scenery is left to the choice of each pilot.
Most flights using X-Plane 11 will also benefit from improved mesh which can be obtained from https://www.alpilotx.net/ There is HD and UHD available depending on region. Just check each download page and locate the relevant tile/co-ordinate, download and install as usual. Ensure that the mesh folder is placed in the correct order at bottom of Scenery_packs.ini file.

Aircraft Suggested: Any capable of 140 kias
Comms: Unicom 122.80 unless instructed by ATC

Jandakot Aerodrome services general aviation aircraft located in close proximity to Perth Internation Airport and Pearce Airbase further to the north.
For this flight we depart Jandakot to the north and track the VFR Route 4 along the coast to our destination of Leeman. For the purposes of this flight it will be assumed Pearce restricted airspace R146A is active will and require the use of VFR 1/VFR 2 to avoid infringing the airspace.
Scenery limitations
Jandakot recently underwent some changes when the 12/30 runway was extended. Any documentation at Air Services Australia in recent AIRACs will reflect these changes. Sadly, simulation scenery for P3D/FSX and X-Plane has failed to keep pace. Both simulations still depict Jandakot as displayed in the accompanying CASA manuevring chart displayed below.

This Weeks Flight on 28th October 2020 finds us in Japan. The main reason for this flight is as an introduction to some of the new MSFS2020 scenery for Japan however the flight is not restricted to that platform. This flight will be a scenic tour around the famous Mount Fuji with some touch and goes. The flight should be acceptably scenic in all simulators.
Scenery Suggested:
With the plethora of simulation platforms now being flown it has become tedious to make scenery recommendations so scenery is left to the choice of each pilot.
Most flights in X-plane 11 will also benefit from improved mesh which can be obtained from https://www.alpilotx.net/ There is HD and UHD available depending on region. Just check each download page and locate the relevant tile/co-ordinate, download and install as usual. Ensure that the mesh folder is placed in the correct order at bottom of Scenery_packs.ini file.

Aircraft Suggested: Any capable of 140 kias
Comms: Unicom 122.80 unless instructed by ATC

Enjoy the beautiful scenery that NSW and the Gold Coast offer within your simulators!

What is East Coast Connect?
East Coast Connect is a new event that offers two different types of events every four weeks. Running every second Saturday, the first round is a connection between Brisbane, Sydney and the Gold Coast. In the second round, we connect Brisbane & Cairns!
Pilots can expect ATC to be online between the nominated airfields from 0730z - 1130z!

We recommend the following routes for you to fly during this event; however, you are more than welcome to fly to different aerodromes within the coverage area!

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
