What is Pacific Island Link?
Pacific Island Link is a monthly event in which we explore the pacific islands within VATPAC and occasionally within our neighboring divisions. Each month you can expect to fly routes across Melanesia, Polynesia and on occasion Micronesia. This event for the most part will fall on the first Saturday of each month from 0800z - 1100z and you can expect flight times anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3 hours.

This Month (01/06/2019) from 0800z - 1100z:
Flying around PNG can be daunting but can also fresh and exciting! This week we invite you to join us in Port Moresby to the holiest and most amazing past Iron Mic award winner Airport Wewak!

Swift
Swift is a recent VATSIM Pilot Client alternative now released to the public as a beta release candidate. This pilot client is a one fits all alternative and will work with FSX, P3D V3/V4 and XPlane in either 32 bit Windows or 64 bit Windows, Mac and Linux. This client, once installed and configured (not for the faint of heart - some guidance can be found in this video tutorial for those with X-Plane on Windows x64), also provides a capability for pilots to designate a private voice channel to allow communication with other pilots in the same voice channel. However, to do this requires a frequency over ride to be set allowing the client to ignore the set frequency instead providing text entry into a text box. Into this box the name of the voice room needs to be entered to enable voice communication. A voice room is typically in the form of "some.server.org/<Airport ICAO>". The server component is ALWAYS "rw1.vatpac.org". So this week's departure would use "rw1.vatpac.org/<Airport ICAO>".
For airports without an airport ICAO it is typical to use VATPAC VFR Virtual voice room acccessed using 131.25 in FSINN. The equivalent for SWIFT is "rw1.vatpac.org/virtualvfr".
Altitude : Once clear of Launceston, remain below Launceston CTA

This event begins 06/03/19 and repeats every week on Monday for 2 occurrences

By far the most popular of our regular weekly events, on any given Milk Run Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with our Spilled Milk Run Monday events, details of which can be found on the Spilled Milk Run page, the Milk Run invites you to fly in any direction between Sydney and Melbourne and all destinations in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Prefer to control? We recommend getting in early. ATC positions on Milk Run Monday are often scarce so definitely worth being an early bird.
Traffic levels traditionally start to pick up at around 7:30pm AEST / AEDT and generally peak between 8:30pm and 9:30pm AEST / AEDT.

Event Details
This flight provides an opportunity to explore the NASA Space Centre in Florida. Pilots using X-Plane have some additional scenery to compliment the existing default for the area. This scenery is set post Shuttle and depicts the current practice of launching unmanned vehicles. Those flying legacy FSX have default scenery depicting the launch and retrieval of Shuttle missions.
Atypically, pilots are encouraged to fly a small jet aircraft. This is to emulate the use of the Northrop T38 Talon used by NASA astronauts as their personal qualifying and taxi service. So pilots with the aircraft in their personal hangar are encouraged to use it for the flight.
Simulation Date/Time : Current date set to daylight.

The days have grown short and winter has returned to Australasia.
From New Zealand's snow-covered South Island to the beaches of Australia's Gold Coast, from wild and windy Wellington to cosmopolitan Melbourne and bustling Sydney, aircraft everywhere are taking to the skies to Cross the Ditch!

What's it all about?
For twenty hours this December, the skies over the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand will be filled with aircraft all on a mission to Cross the Ditch.
An example of that typical down-under understatement, this "ditch" is over 1100nm wide. The flight routes all range from two-and-a-half to four hours flight time.
Throughout the event, the Oceania region's two divisions – VATNZ and VATPAC – will be providing full ATC coverage, in the Southern Hemisphere's premiere oceanic event.
This is a great opportunity to experience Oceanic flying without the need to commit to an eight-hour flight!
If you're new to Oceanic Flying, our reporting tool makes taking part a breeze.
Event Times
This twenty hour event is timed to allow pilots from all over the world join the fun:
UTC: Saturday 15th June 2019 18:00 - Sunday 16th June 2019 14:00 AEST: Sunday 16th June 2019 04:00 - Monday 17th June 2019 00:00 NZST: Sunday 16th June 2019 06:00 - Monday 17th June 2019 02:00
Waves
This season's event is organised in waves. Each airport will have a three-to-four hour departure window, during which time flights will be able to leave for the next destination. As the window closes, the departure window will open at the next destination.
Given each of the flights is 2.5 - 4hrs in length, the previous wave's flights will be arriving at the same airport as the next wave departs, maximising the amount of traffic at each airport.
NOTE: in order to ensure that you have ATC coverage throughout your flight, you MUST fly the wave route that is active at the time of your departure.
The individual routes are designed to ensure as much opposing traffic enroute as possible.
Each flight passes from one Oceania division to the other, and the result is six mini-flyins over the course of twenty hours!

Altitude : Remain OCTA below Class C & D Tamworth Steps. If ATC is active clearance will be required prior to passing Duri Gap

Join us June 24th from 1830 AEST to 2100 AEST as we spill the milk to the south west of WA.. Spilled Milk Run Monday - South West!
This Spilled Milk Run Monday we will be exploring the South West of Western Australia and the many regional airports it has to offer with the focus of this event being Perth. This time around we are going to be taking a little bit of a different approach, both literally and figuratively.
You may expect many different instrument approaches such as ILS and RNAV at the larger airports, or even GNSS, VOR and NBD approaches in some of our smaller fields.
Much of these airports are in uncontrolled airspace so make sure you have your phraseology at its peak, ready for some more testing procedures for pilots and ATC alike.

FSCopilot/FSInn
VATSIM pilots connecting to the network using FSCOPILOT/FSINN can install an additional file that provides the ability to tune the CTAF frequency and make voice announcements to other pilots on frequency. These files can be obtained via this link.

This event begins 07/01/19 and repeats every week on Monday until 07/22/19

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

      Scenery
Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
