Event Details

This evening's flight is a special event to coincide with Easter Sunday. Appropriately the flight will be conducted over the isolated location of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) deep in the South Pacific.
To fully enjoy this event FSX/P3D pilots should first download and install the Easter Island scenery created by Carlysle Sharpe.
Pilots are tasked with locating as many stone figurine statues, or more correctly, Moai, as possible. The image above includes examples located around the terminal buildings at the Mataveri Airport. Pilots should locate and familiarise themselves with the look and feel of these examples to assist them in identifying the many others scattered across the island. The accompanying map depicts the known locations of the many Maoi. Some, however, are not at all easy to locate since there are a few that lay half buried due to land subsidence. Choose a slow fixed or rotor winged aircraft and explore the mysteries of Easter Island.
Simulation Date/Time : Current date set to daylight.
Weather : Real World / Fair weather if real world is unsuitable for VFR operations.
Distance :<40 nm
Est Flight Time : variable depending on the persistence of the pilot. Allow around 65 mins
Aircraft : Ideally suited to a small rotor wing such as the R-22 Robison. However, those not comfortable with flying helicopters can fly a slow fixed wing aircraft with excellent visibility such as Piper Cub, A22 Foxbat or even a classic vitage open cockpit bi-plane such as a Tiger Moth.
Communications :All pilots should be fine using unicom frequency 122.80.
Altitude : Pilot's discretion
Navigation : Pilots are required to navigate visually. There is no flightplan available for this event.

After a long hiatus, GA Madness is back and stronger than ever!

What is GA Madness?
GA Madness focuses on the smaller side of aviation. It's designed to test a controller’s limits with high workload into small airports, with VFR and IFR aircraft. GA Madness focuses on class D airports and this time we’ll be focusing on Essendon, Avalon and Moorabbin.

Where can I fly?
These airports are some of the busiest airports in Australia, however, don't get enough TLC from our controllers. You are welcome to conduct circuts, local area flights or even instrument operations. You may also want to fly a scenic route over the CBD! For those who are looking for longer flights, you could travel across the Bass Strait or perhaps conduct a Jetgo flight to another airport. The choice is yours!

Bring plenty of fuel and some charts as our controllers assist you to navigate through one of the busiest TMA's in the country.

The Details!

Welcome to the latest Iron Mic attempt featuring Gold Coast. With a lovely new ORBX City Scene scenery package released and some fantastic freeware available, why not fly into the Gold Coast? With VFR and IFR traffic welcome, make sure our controllers are working hard.
The following positions will be the primary positions:

CG_TWR
CG_APP
BN-DOS_CTR

To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Gold Coast prior to occupying others. Remember, There are no reserved positions so if one of the above positions is available, logon!

What is Iron Mic?

Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds which recognizes a position with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic.

How do we know about our progress?

Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week.

Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Gold Coast positions. You can do this on Facebook or the forums.

VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11100

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

With Iron Mic running this week, today we open the week with a Spilled Milk run, heading to the Gold Coast

This event begins 04/23/18 and repeats every week on Monday for 3 occurrences

By far the most popular of our regular weekly events, on any given Milk Run Monday you'll find the famous "J-Curve" between Melbourne and Sydney well serviced by both pilots and ATC.
Not to be confused with our Spilled Milk Run Monday events, details of which can be found on the Spilled Milk Run page, the Milk Run invites you to fly in any direction between Sydney and Melbourne and all destinations in between (Canberra, Albury etc).
Prefer to control? We recommend getting in early. ATC positions on Milk Run Monday are often scarce so definitely worth being an early bird.
Traffic levels traditionally start to pick up at around 7:30pm AEST / AEDT and generally peak between 8:30pm and 9:30pm AEST / AEDT.

This week  VATNZ & VATPAC have a combined event.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB). Fly from our capital over to Australia's capital for ANZAC celebrations. Flights normally take approximately 3.5 hours, it is suggested to depart near the beginning of the event to maximise ATC although most positions should be staffed throughout the event. Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
