Adelaide Non-precision Approach Night

The name says it all. Due to "ground works" at Adelaide airport all precision approaches have been temporarily decommissioned. Nothing but non-precision approaches in use for this event!

Whats the difference between a precision and non-precision approach?

Non-precision approaches provide lateral guidance (that is, heading information), but do not provide vertical guidance (i.e., altitude and/or glidepath guidance).

some example of these include;

  • VOR - VHF omnidirectional range
  • NDB - Non-directional beacon
  • RNP - Required navigation performance

Precision approach systems provide both lateral (heading) and vertical (glidepath) guidance.

some examples of these include;

  • ILS - Instrument landing system
  • GLS - GBAS landing system
