This Weeks Flight for Wednesday14th December 2022 is a flight along the Hudson River, New York. Pilots will depart Monmouth Executive (KBLM) and head northbound along east side of river turn around at wpt1 and return southbound along west side of river returning via  Marlboro (2N8)to Monmouth Executive (KBLM). Remember they fly on the right hand side of the river.

The technical name is “Skyline Route” both northbound and southbound and is within the New York Class B SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area). Refer the flight route details linked here. Hudson River SFRA Route It is important to look at these charts.

NB: We will not be entering the actual East River (Exclusion Area) so ignore references to that section in the download linked .

Entering the route from the south (northbound) obtain clearance prior to Verrazano “VZ” Bridge from Newark Tower on 127.85. Once clearance is obtained change to CTAF 123.05 and conduct mandatory reporting at points starting at “VZ” as detailed in the planned flight route. After turning around at wpt2 gain a new clearance from LaGuardia Tower on 126.05 prior to the Alpine reporting point at which time you will also commence mandatory reporting on CTAF 123.05 at all the same points southbound. If no tower just tune to published CTAF 123.05.

NB: Circling of Statue of Liberty is to be conducted counter-clockwise in need.

Flight suggested by David Bromage

Scenery: Due to the plethora of flight sim programs now in use scenery is at the discretion of each pilot. Some report points may not be obvious depending on scenery however mandatory reports must still be made so your GPS or whatever should show where you are in the route.

MSFS2020 will need this small download Alpine Tower Reporting Point

X-Plane 11/12 will need this download NYC SFRA Landmarks / Reporting Points

Aircraft: Low and Slow capable of 100 kias is recommended i.e. Super Cub, Zlin Savage or similar.

Comms: If no tower tune to mandatory CTAF 123.05 for all reporting. Please keep calls simple as per example in route details link.

Flight Route: Refer download above

It must be noted that report points are not just waypoints. Each point must be reported both northbound and southbound. i.e. northbound one still reports “Liberty Northbound” and on way back “Liberty Southbound” etc etc.

Weather: Real time weather, fair weather if conditions are not suitable for VFR Flying.
