This Weeks Flight on 10th November 2021 is a flight covering most of the The Torres Strait which is a strait between Australia and the Melanesian island of New Guinea. It is 151 km wide at its narrowest extent and comprises some 274 small islands and atolls. To the south is Cape York Peninsula, the northernmost extremity of the Australian mainland. To the north is the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. 14 of the islands are inhabited by indigenous Torres Strait Islanders who comprised five cultural groups. The political administration is a bit complicated with various functions administered by the Torres Strait Regional Authority which is a statutory authority of the Australian federal government and some community services administered by Queensland.
