Communications

Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. Now that VATSIM has introduced AFV (Audio For VATSIM) CTAF can now be used across all VATSIM approved pilot clients. Pilots are requested to tune to the published frequency as detailed in the flight details for an event when operating in or around an aerodome to make and monitor CTAF broadcasts. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM COC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor Unicom (Australia 122.80). It is highly recommended that pilots ensure that at least one of their "on board" COM radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive unicom transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF frequency. Please Note. All pilots should also be vigilant regarding the receipt of text on both unicom and CTAF. If it is discovered there is a pilot participating that is unable to receive voice transmissions, pilots should arrange to also broadcast via text to ensure those pilots without the benefit of voice is able to receive appropriate broadcasts. VATSIM provides an update guide for getting AFV working on each of the approved pilot clients.

Archerfield Procedures

Archerfield is a general aviation class D aerodrome and is located in close proximity to Brisbane International Airport and Amberley Airbase. Air Services Australia provides the "Tips for Flying at Archerfield" publication and is a highly recommended source of supplemental information for pilots unfamiliar with operations at the aerodrome. This flight requires an Outbound to the East departure from Archerfield. This now dated CASA "OnTrack" instructional video hosted on Youtube.com provides some useful insight into what to expect for this flight.

Hi Russell, I'd like to join in as an Observer (as an old newbie returning as a newbie). How is the best way to do that? I have FS2002, using the default Cessna 172. I live actually in Lismore. I don't have a VATSIM client installed on my current PC yet, but did have Squarkbox on my older PC. If I download Squarkbox will that suffice to get VATSIM connected for the event? Thanks, cheers, Mark VH-MAD.

My other thought, these days with Skype, Microsoft Teams (I work remotely a lot and we use that for work), etc. would it be possible to be a passenger with someone, via screensharing, i.e. I see their screen?

Have this morning fired up my older PC that has FS2002 + Squawkbox 4.0. plus Archerfield, Cooly scenery, plus the RealAir Victorian Kangan Batman TAFE Cessna 172SP. Have set a "my Park" location at Archerfield well off to the sw corner of the airport so as not to interfere with anyone. Am thinking I can come online and observe from there, i.e. watch the aircraft depart on Fri. Am thinking that if I set up a parked location at each airfield, I can jump to each as the event proceeds and observe you arriving/departing, and also get a good experience of listening to the radio calls. Does that sound like "a plan"?
