Ever get sick and tired of flying in a B737 at 35,000ft not exploring all that amazing scenery that is hidden below the clouds? VATPAC Invites members of the VATSIM Community to try something different, flights in and around the beautiful South East Queensland
Fly from either Sunshine Coast Airport (YBSU/YBMC,) Archerfield Airport (YBAF) or the marvelous Gold Coast Airport (YBCG) in your favourite prop aircraft, with Full ATC Services from 0600z - 1000z

    Event Info:
GA Madness focuses on the smaller side of aviation. It's designed to test a controller’s limits with high workload into small airports, with VFR and IFR aircraft. GA Madness focuses on class D airports and this time we’ll be focusing on the sunny Sunshine Coast, Archerfield and the gateway airport to the sprawling beaches and sands of Queensland... the Gold Coast.

    What can I do?
These airports are some of the busiest airports in Australia however, under appreciated in VATPAC. You are welcome to conduct circuits, local area flights or even instrument operations. You may also want to fly a scenic route over the CBD! For those who are looking for longer flights, you could fly to and from Toowoomba or fly from Ballina-Byron.
Bring plenty of fuel and some charts as our controllers assist you to navigate through one of the busiest TMA's in the country.

    Routes:
    If you are planning to fly via airways (Mainly IFR,) VATPAC recommends the following routes to assist in Traffic Flow - Charts for all 3 aerodromes can be found here;
Gold Coast (YBCG) -> Archerfield (YBAF)

    ATC:
Controllers interested in controlling the event are encouraged to submit their ATC Applications here - Applications will remain open until 2 days before the event (13th September,) with a roster will be released one week before the event (8th September)
Dependent on the number of ATC Applications will ultimately persuade the number of controller positions that are eventually published and rostered. Positions that are planned to be rostered are below.

    Event Details
Simulation Date/Time : Current date set to daylight.
Weather : Real World / Fair weather if real world is unsuitable for VFR operations.
    Distance : 125 nm
Est Flight Time : approx 80 mins
Aircraft : Single piston engine aircraft such as Cessna 172, Piper Warrior or similar capable of 105 to 125 kias.
    Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields.
    FSCopilot/FSInn
VATSIM pilots connecting to the network using FSCOPILOT/FSINN can install an additional file that provides the ability to tune the CTAF frequency and make voice announcements to other pilots on frequency. These files can be obtained via this link.

    Swift
Swift is a recent VATSIM Pilot Client alternative now released to the public as a beta release candidate. This pilot client is a one fits all alternative and will work with FSX, P3D V3/V4 and XPlane in either 32 bit Windows or 64 bit Windows, Mac and Linux. This client, once installed and configured (not for the faint of heart - some guidance can be found in this video tutorial for those with X-Plane on Windows x64), also provides a capability for pilots to designate a private voice channel to allow communication with other pilots in the same voice channel. However, to do this requires a frequency over ride to be set allowing the client to ignore the set frequency instead providing text entry into a text box. Into this box the name of the voice room needs to be entered to enable voice communication. A voice room is typically in the form of "some.server.org/<Airport ICAO>". The server component is ALWAYS "rw1.vatpac.org". So this week's departure would use "rw1.vatpac.org/<Airport ICAO>".
For airports without an airport ICAO it is typical to use VATPAC VFR Virtual voice room acccessed using 131.25 in FSINN. The equivalent for SWIFT is "rw1.vatpac.org/virtualvfr".
Altitude : Comply with altitude restrictions imposed by Williamtown Restricted airspace.
    Flightplan
File as : YWVA YCNK YMND EGT SRO YGCR GCR WDU YTRE
GPS Flightplan is available for FSX and X-Plane FMS and also provided is the original Plan-G flightplan for those that find this useful all enclosed within a Zip archive.
Navigation : Pilots familiar with the area can navigate visually, for those less familiar the accompanying GPS Flightplan is the recommended method of navigating the flight plan.

      Communications
Australia uses CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) for radio comms at uncontrolled airfields. During an event, Pilots are requested to broadcast intentions on the published CTAF. Pilots should also be aware that it is a VATSIM CoC (Code of Conduct) requirement that all pilots at uncontrolled airfields should monitor UNICOM on 122.800. Pilots should ensure that at least one of their radios (COM 2 being the most likely) is tuned to receive UNICOM transmissions in addition to transmitting and receiving on the published CTAF.
Pilots also should read this post regarding the implications of using VATSIM UNICOM for CTAF. It provides some insight into potential pitfalls for the unwary when monitoring 122.80 in a CTAF environment.

Due to the plethora of simulation platforms now being used, scenery is left to the discretion of each pilot.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
