    15 April 2019 12:00 AM      20 April 2019 11:59 PM

Welcome to the latest VATPAC Iron Mic attempt featuring Sydney. Sydney is the busiest airport in Australia and provides more international routes than any other in the country including connections to the Pacific, New Zealand, South-East Asia, Asia, Middle-East, Africa, North America, South America and soon to be Europe. With such a variety of routes, its perfect for anything so make sure our controllers are working hard!
The following positions will be the primary positions:

    SY_TWR
    SY_APP
    ML-WOL_CTR

To give us the best chance possible, please logon to the above positions at Sydney prior to occupying others. Remember, There are no reserved positions so if one of the above positions is available, logon!

    What is Iron Mic?
Iron Mic is a weekly competition that VATSIM holds to recognizes the positions with the most hours logged on the network. It is broken into 3 categories; TWR, APP and CTR. The position in each category that logs the most online hours over a 7 day period wins the Iron Mic.
Iron Mic runs from 0000z on Monday to 2359z on Sunday (0859 Monday AEDT)
How do we know about our progress?

Click on this link (http://fsmine.dhis.org/stats/showstats.cgi) to view all the VATSIM ATC stats for the week.

Remember, Our aim is to keep the TWR, APP and CTR positions open as much as possible. Coordinate with other controllers to ensure maximum coverage of the Cairns positions. You can do this on Facebook, Teamspeak or the forums.

VATSIM has set out a few rules regarding Iron Mic which can be viewed here https://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=11100

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! Good Luck VATPAC!

    19 April 2019 11:30 PM      20 April 2019 03:30 AM

Ladies and Gentleman, On Saturday 20th April 2019, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane welcomes VATUSA to Friday Night Ops. Kicking off at Friday 19th April 2019 at 2330z , So drop the juice box or the glass of whiskey and get your flight plans filed.
VATPAC has your ATC Covered manning airspace between Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane! We invite and encourage you to fly between the three airports, In any order you wish. You should allow approx 1.5-2.5 hours flying time for Jets between any given pair.

    Flight Planning
In Australia, flight plans are filed in the ICAO method, with the SID/STAR not included with the initial filing. This will be provided by ATC on contact with clearance delivery (for departure) and with Centre, usually just prior to initial descent clearance.

In Sydney each different runway has it's own set of SID's, which can be hard to predict ahead of time. Due to this, the outbound route should start with "TESAT". TESAT is an RNAV waypoint located on the airfield, replacing the old VOR "SY" which has since been decommissioned in the real world as part of the Navigation Rationalization project which removed 179 ground-based navigation aids on the 26th of May 2016, meaning GNSS is now the primary means of navigation for all instrument flight rule aircraft and flight plans.
Knowledge about deleting waypoints and closing route discontinuities in your FMS will be useful. Cheats include knowing the 2nd waypoint along the initial airway. Additionally be aware that ATC is likely to ammend the text of your route when giving clearance in the same manner as the Electronic Flight Strip is used in the real world. Once you file it, it's theirs.

To help with filing your flight plan, we reccomend Simbrief as a free service additionally there is a number of payware flightplaning software

    Information for Air Traffic Controllers

ATC Applications are now open for this event. You can apply here.
The amount of positions published will depend strongly upon the amount of applications. As previous trends have shown, This event attracts close to if not more than 80-100 Pilots. As such, We would love to have a large amount of controller positions rostered. Due to the length of the event, We have split the roster into two, 2 hour periods.

It’s the end of the month and Spilled Milk Run Monday is back on the calendar. This week we are taking you from New Zealand, to Australia as we commemorate those who shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old.
Fly from Wellington (NZWN) to Canberra (YSCB) and Sydney (YSSY) with full expectations of ATC Services throughout your flight!
Please Note: Depart NZWN between 06-09z. Arrival ATC will be online from 08-12z in Australia!

      Routes:
We recommend the following routes between Wellington, Canberra and Sydney.
NZWN - YSCB: TANEN M636 SASRO M636 PLUGA DCT RAZZI
NZWN - YSSY: TANEN M636 PLUGA RIKNI N774 MARLN

      Flying in Oceanic Airspace:
Normal ATC throughout Australia (Brisbane Centre, Melbourne Centre, Sydney Approach, etc.) rely on radar to determine where an aircraft is in the air. Over the ocean, there is no radar. This non-radar airspace is controlled by Oceanic ATC.
All Oceanic Controlled Airspace in Australia is controlled from Brisbane, so all oceanic controllers in Australia are called "Brisbane Radio"
One of the significant differences between radar and oceanic flying is the need for position reports.
Position reports are how ATC can determine where you are. Position reports contain estimates for waypoints, speeds, altitudes and any other information. Because there is no radar over the ocean, ATC relies on time-based separation and reports from the pilots. ATC has no way of determining where you are unless you specifically tell them.
      The standard format is:
Current/Previous waypoint name and the time you crossed that point. Current Flight Level Mach number if assigned by ATC. Your next waypoint and estimate for that point. The waypoint after that. For example: "Qantas 123 is position PLUGA at time 0523, Flight Level 380, estimating VELKU at 0750, SASRO next."
You can use the Oceanic Reporting Tool to help construct oceanic position reports.
Find more information regarding Oceanic Procedures here.

      Controllers:
Controllers who wish to control a position during this event are encouraged to apply here. Positions that do not have a controller online (i.e. no controller controlling the position) will remain free for all controllers available on the day to control.
